NON – CHEMICAL WATER CONDITIONERS

Non-chemical water conditioners are products where each manufacturer has their own opinion as to how and why their own system works and why it does not work under certain circumstances. The advanced water conditioner market has been growing because of the environmental damage which ion exchange water softeners cause each time they are regenerated and when sodium is dumped into the drain and hence the water cycle. Other reasons include health issues of consuming high content sodium from water softeners, the cost of salt for regeneration, the cost of anti-corrosion products, maintenance costs of the softener and the cost of water used in each regeneration cycle. The use of such softeners is now effectively banned in most of Europe and is spreading to the USA, especially California and Texas.

WHAT MAKES WATER HARD?

When water falls on the ground as rain it soaks into the earth and picks up calcium and other minerals as it reaches its underground water sources and storage areas. The water is rich in CO2 from the air, humus and leaf mold. Thus enriched, the water may also pick up lime from the stones and rocks and then carry this dissolved calcium bicarbonate into the water gathering, storage and distribution networks. These naturally hard waters can be beneficial to health but are not good for water distribution pipes, appliances that use water, water heaters, dishwashers, etc. The minerals and other elements present in the water are the cause of scale build-up and other damage which can result in early replacement, increased servicing costs and decreased efficiency. The main problems are high energy loss during water heating caused by scale insulating the heating elements, the calcium deposits inside pipe installations and appliances causing increased flow resistance leading to high pressure drops through the system and the scale build-up on tile, faucets, toilet and glass surfaces.
